Interview /// The Agonist

La banda canadiense de metalcore, The Agonist, llegó la noche del 12 de Septiembre a la Ciudad de México. Se fueron (literalmente) del aeropuerto al Pasagüero dónde se encontraban alrededor de 200 personas esperando a verlos tocar su primer concierto de 2 en México.

Después de haber tocado 2 noches seguidas en la Ciudad de México, siendo ésta su primera vez en México, ¿Cómo te sientes de haber sido la principal banda del primer concierto y de alternar con otras bandas de culto en el segundo?
Alissa: ¡Esta es la primera vez que tocamos 2 conciertos en menos de 12 horas! ¡El primero, la gente genial! En el segundo, no estaba muy lleno el lugar, sin embargo hubo gran actitud de la gente hacia nosotros.

¿Cómo puedes explicar esa gran actitud arriba y debajo del escenario de The Agonist hacia la gente?
Alissa: Nosotros definitivamente estamos creando una gran base de fans en México, fue notorio en el concierto de anoche, ¡Es bueno y agradable saberlo! Siempre es un gran desafío estar en festivales siendo una banda pequeña, por lo que esperamos crear nuevos fans de éste segundo concierto.

¿Tienen planes de regresar a México para continuar promoviendo su segundo y nuevo álbum Lullabies for the Dormant Mind?
Alissa: Queremos regresar a México con éste mismo álbum, es la primera vez y está muy bien por lo que intentaremos regresar el próximo año a México.

¿Qué opinas de la gente mexicana?
Alissa: Los fans mexicanos son mucho más increíbles de lo que pensabamos, amigos nuestros nos habían comentado muy buenas cosas sobre México y sobrepasó nuestras expetativas. ¡Los mexicanos están muy enamorados del metal! La escena metalera en México es grandiosa, probablmente una de las mejores que haya visto.

¿Después de México van a Sudamérica?
Alissa: Sí, Venezuela, Caracas, hemos escuchado sorprendentes cosas de esos lugares, estamos curiosos sobre la gente allá.

Bandas thrash metal y post-metalcore, ¿Crees que van por el mismo camino o van separados?
Alissa: Yo veo al thrash como la vieja escuela, ¡soy gran fan! En cuanto a bandas de Grindcore, hay tendencias de este tipo de música, hay bandas que tratan de mantener a sus fans como Walls of Jericho o bandas Europeas como Nightwish, etc. Ambos estilos se mueven en paralelo al igual que sus fans ya que les gustan ambos.

Voivod toca en el Mezcal Metal Fest, son un grupo de culto para el metal y también son de Canadá, ¿Cómo te sientes de compartir el mismo escenario con ellos?
Alissa: ¡Es un honor! Nunca hemos tocado con ellos en Canadá (sonríe), regresamos al hotel esta mañana y asegurarnos de alcanzarlos para poder platicar con ellos un poco.

The Canadian Metalcore band The Agonist arrived the night of September 12th in Mexico City. They went (literally) directly from the airport to the Pasagüero (small venue) where around two hundred persons where waiting to see them play the first of 2 shows in Mexico.

After having played 2 nights on the row in Mexico City, been your first time in Mexico, How do you feel been the main band on the first show and to alternate with other cult bands on the second?
Alissa: This is the first time we play 2 shows in less than 12 hours! the first one, great crowd. On the second one, wasn’t very busy however was very good attitude from the people to us.

How can you explain that great attitude on and down the stage from The Agonist to the people?
Alissa: We are definitely growing a great fan base in Mexico, that was clear on our first show last night, is nice and good to know that! It is always a big challenge to be in festivals been a small band, so hopefully we will create new fans from our second show.

Do you have plans to come back to Mexico continuing promoting this new second album Lullabies for the Dormant Mind?
Alissa: We want to come back to Mexico with this same album, the first time is going good so next year will try to come back to Mexico.

What do you think about Mexican crowd?
Alissa: Mexican fans are even more amazing that we thought, friends have been telling us very good things about Mexico and they oversized our expectations. Mexicans are some in love with metal! Metal Scene in Mexico is great, probably the best one I have seen.

After Mexico you’ll go to South America?
Alissa: Yes, Venezuela, Caracas, we have heard amazing things about those places, we are curious about the fans there.

Thrash Metal and post-metalcore bands, do you thing are going in the same or separate ways?
Alissa: I see Thrash as the Old School, I’ huge fan! In terms of Grindcore bands, there are trends of that kind of music, there are bands to try to keep their fans like Walls of Jericho or European bands as Nightwish, etc. Both styles move in parellel as their fans like them equal!

Voivod plays in the Mezcal Metal Fest, they are a cult Metal band and they are also from Canada, how do you feel to share the same stage with them?
Alissa: It’s an honor! We’ve never played with them in Canada (smiles), we backed to the hotel this morning to make sure to catch them there and talk a while.
