5 breves de The Horrors

Recientemente, tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a Tom Cowan, bajista y tecladista de la banda británica The Horrors. En esta breve sesión, Tom nos contó en forma muy concreta sobre la música que la banda escuchó para crear Skying, técnicas de expresión artística y hasta cómo prefiere escuchar la música. A continuación, las preguntas, respuestas y traducciones de nuestra comunicación con Tom Cowan.

Recuerdo una entrevista hace un tiempo, previa a su última visita a México, donde Faris contaba que The Horrors siempre persiguen un sonido diferente y Skying claramente lo logra en todo modo posible. También leímos que Faris enseñó a Rachel Zeffira el trabajo de Phil Spector con la música de las Ronettes en los sesentas. ¿Qué fue lo que la banda escuchó durante las sesiones de Skying?
Todo tipo de música. Escuchamos mucho de los Beatles, Harmonia y Brian Eno por mencionar algunos. Escuchamos mucha música… mucha. Habremos pasado por cerca de cien álbumes durante ese período.

Cuando escuchan música, ¿qué artefacto prefieren para reproducirla? Una tornamesa, iPod o reproductor de CDs?
No creo que sea muy importante con que escucha (la música) la gente, sino que escuchen buena música. Personalmente, prefiero escuchar mucha música en mi computadora o en mi tornamesa. Odio los CDs. No me parece que sean buenos.

¿Cuál es la canción perfecta para tocar a la medianoche?
“Your Love” de Frankie Knuckles. Nada le gana a eso.

¿Siguen haciendo los fanzines que lanzan de acuerdo a sus álbumes?
No en realidad, aunque planeamos trabajar de vuelta en eso. Planeamos algo especial para nuestros fans, aunque será hasta el próximo año.

Ustedes son el tipo de músicos que realmente merecen el título de “artistas” y no parecen mostrar algún tipo de límite para expresarse. ¿Hay alguna técnica –nueva o vieja- que les gustaría intentar?
Hay técnicas de sonido y creación que me gustaría intentar. La música generativa me interesa mucho.

I remember an interview a while ago prior to your last visit to Mexico City. Faris told me The Horrors always pursue for a different sound and Skying clearly achieved it in every possible way. We also read that Faris’ taught Rachel Zeffira Phil Spector’s work behind the Ronettes’ music in the sixties. What did The Horrors play during the Skying sessions?
All kinds of stuff. We were listening to a lot of Beatles, Harmonia, Brian Eno to name but a few. We listen to a lot of music lots, we must have gone through 100 albums between us during that period.

When playing music, what do you rather? A phono player (turntable), iPod or cd player?
I don’t think it’s important really what people listen to music with, just that they listen to good music. I personally listen to a lot of music on my computer or on my turntable. I hate CDs though, I really don’t think they’re very good at all.

What’s the perfect song to play at midnight? (Yours and someone else’s).
Frankie Knuckles – Your Love. Nothing beats that.

Are you still running the fanzines of your albums?
Not really, although we’re planning on getting back into that. We’re planning something special for our fans to come next year though.

You’re the kind of musicians that truly deserve the title as “artists” and you don’t seem to find any sort of boundary to express yourselves. Is there any technique -new or old- you would like to try?
There are techniques of sound and music creation I would like to try. Generative music interests me quite a lot.
