Hablar de The Strokes es difícil, desde luego son una banda grande y emblemática, pero desde 2001 con la salida del hoy clásico Is This It la banda ha ido decreciendo en cuanto su nivel compositivo se trata. Al menos sus dos primeros discos fueron capaces de marcar todo una generación, fueron discos que no precisamente eran innovadores pero por el momento en el que el Rock estaba sumido, vinieron a “rescatar” y reavivar e inspirar de nuevo una escena que parecía perdida. He ahí el problema con el que The Strokes cargará por siempre y hasta el día final de sus vidas: haber creado un par de discos inmortales, que anclen todo a comparación y a unas expectativas de todo el mundo de volver a marcar una generación; por ende de ahí en adelante cualquier nuevo esfuerzo como First Impressions Of Earth o Angles aún con la intención de superarse con un crecimiento artístico, siempre han quedado a deber o al menos, no han vuelto a lograr la unanimidad de opiniones.

Pero lo intentaron y hubo aciertos, en First Impressions Of Earth lograron un sonido limpio, más pretencioso, de más cuerpo, elaborado y hasta elegante. Lo de Angles que hizo más ruido por su gran regreso fue tachado por algunos como mediocre, pero hubo grandes resultados y tras su desaparición de 4 años era de pararse y aplaudirles, por sus experimentos con el New Wave y electrónica. Tengan por seguro que ni una sola canción de Comedown Machine se equipara a los destacados de cualquier disco anterior aunque “All The Time” se siente a poco de lograrlo. Esta vez, se podría decir que The Strokes sigue aferrado a buscar nuevas formas de variar sus sonidos, lo cual está bien, pero parece que cada vez se exigen menos tomando en cuenta a lo que suena el resultado final. “One Way Trigger” y “All The Time” no tienen mucho que ver aquí, por un lado su más descarado experimento y por el otro, el sabor a sus primeros gloriosos años que devolvió esperanzas a sus fans alejados, pero también mostrado como una urgencia del grupo en utilizar el factor nostalgia en memoria a Is This It.

El álbum abre con 5 segundos que prometen ser un álbum potencialmente de guitarras, hasta que todo se transforma en el nuevo virus del grupo. Con “Tap Out” parecen haber encontrado algunas viejas cintas de Blondie o que en el estudio encontraron algún vinyl de Michael Jackson, los puntos de guitarra son dignos pero el falsete de Casablancas es tan desapasionado que contagia pereza, lamentablemente The Strokes no posee el Swing de dar vida a una canción en es estado. Julian Casablancas encontró la forma de hacer un falsete y desde entonces no ha parado de usarlo. Es ahora que “One Way Trigger” fuera de cualquier virtud representa un problema más en Comedown Machine, se esfuerzan demasiado en ser diferentes que se siente torpe y artificial, y cuando quieren recuperar y sentirse como en sus primeros años (“80’s Comedown Machine“), como unos jóvenes rockeros de garage, suenan a una de las 1,378 bandas que intentaron imitarlos tras su debut; amateur, pobre y sin gracia.

Eventualmente algunas cosas parecen tener forma y sentido, y por extraño que parezca son aquellas que se encuentran a medio camino y no suenan ciento por ciento a The Strokes. Las guitarras cóncavas y la armonía calmada de todos sus instrumentos y voz tenue en “Slow Animals” suena tomado de Phoenix en su etapa Alphabetical. “Chances” recuerda al lado romántico de The Killers o “Partners In Crime” reluce por su aprisa, siendo la pista más dinámica del álbum, es el único momento en que principalmente a Fabrizio Moretti y Nick Valensi se les ocurrió hacer uso de la energía en reposo, Albert Hammond Jr. recuerda que su ocupación es la guitarra rítmica y logran 3 minutos y medio de agilidad pura en el mejor track del disco.

El problema es que Comedown Machine no tiene propósito alguno, cuando no se sabe a qué se quiere llegar simplemente todo esta perdido en medio de nada. Angles como fuese, sonaba experimental pero con idea, era como una transición, pero este esfuerzo (si así se le puede llamar) no hace nada por mantener una identidad coherente. Quizá The Strokes fue el grupo que hizo el mejor disco y canción de la década pasada (Is This It y “Last Night“) y eso es casi innegable, pero son el peor grupo intentando evolucionar o dar un giro a su estilo, se han preguntado por qué nadie le reclama a Arctic Monkeys que vuelvan a crear algo similar a Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, simplemente porque sus sucesores son lo suficientemente sustentables que no necesitan volver a imitarlo.

Deguste en última instancia la borrosa belleza de “Call It Fate, Call It Karma” donde irónicamente se exclama: “Así que no quiero que me recuerdes”, la voz somnolienta de Casablancas es exquisita, por primera vez se agradece el falsete, suena tocada desde un viejo y empolvado vinyl que resguardaba joyas de Jazz, pero es una lástima que las cosas buenas duren una canción y que nada tenga la intención de ser desarrollado. Decían en una entrevista que la portada del disco era una forma de recordar a los viejos discos de acetato, la época de aquel Rock de garage nato. Pero los sentimientos y la nostalgia no son suficientes para sacar a flote un álbum, cuando se ha perdido la química y gran parte de la creatividad, el futuro apunta a cualquier cosa menor que esto.
